Kolkata, 22 April (H.S.): Voters in West Bengal may have to contend with intense heat as the first phase of Assembly polling is set to take place under hot and humid weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heatwave-like conditions in several districts on Thursday, when voting is scheduled.
According to weather officials, districts in south Bengal such as Purulia, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Birbhum are likely to experience high temperatures along with uncomfortable humidity. The prevailing conditions could make it difficult for voters, especially during peak afternoon hours.
While there is a possibility of light rain or thundershowers in some areas, officials said it is unlikely to bring significant relief from the heat. In contrast, parts of north Bengal may witness rainfall and thunderstorms, which could slightly ease weather conditions there.
The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 11 AM and 4 PM, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The first phase of polling is scheduled for April 23, and authorities are expected to make necessary arrangements to ensure voters can cast their ballots despite the challenging weather conditions.
