Angul, Kendrapara, Koraput, Sambalpur Shut Schools Amid Heatwave

Bhubaneswar, 22 April (H.S.): In response to the prevailing heatwave conditions, district administrations in Angul, Kendrapara, Koraput, and Sambalpur have ordered the temporary closure of schools to safeguard students from extreme heat exposure.

The District Education Offices in Kendrapara and Koraput have directed all schools to remain shut from April 23 to April 25. In Sambalpur, authorities have extended the closure period from April 23 to April 27, citing worsening weather conditions. Similarly, the Angul district administration has announced school closures from April 23 to April 25.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, at least 18 locations across the state recorded temperatures of 40°C or above on Tuesday. Jharsuguda was the hottest place in the state, registering a maximum temperature of 43.6°C.

Authorities said the decision to suspend classes was taken as a precautionary measure, with officials closely monitoring the situation and further steps likely depending on weather conditions.
