Imphal, 22 April (HS): In a sustained effort to curb illegal poppy farming in Manipur’s hill and remote regions, Manipur Police, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), have launched a community-based initiative to promote alternative and sustainable livelihoods for farmers.
According to an official statement issued by the Manipur Police Headquarters on Wednesday, the initiative named ‘Hinchi’—meaning “Seeds of Life”—has been introduced in Churachandpur district. The programme aims to steer farmers away from illicit poppy farming by encouraging them to adopt legal cash crops and secure long-term income sources.
Three highly vulnerable areas, previously identified as hotspots for illegal poppy farming, have been strategically targeted under the initiative. Through sustained engagement and dialogue, village chiefs and 127 beneficiary families have been persuaded to transition towards alternative farming practices.
The project has received financial assistance of ₹28 lakh under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from Chennai-based technology firm Segula Technologies. With this support, Manipur Police facilitated the distribution of approximately 55,000 kg of ginger seeds, 450 kg of pea seeds, and 6,500 banana saplings among the identified beneficiaries.
Joint teams of Manipur Police, NCB and local NGO NARPS will continue to monitor the progress, ensuring accountability and providing ongoing guidance to farmers. The initiative also includes support in post-harvest management and market linkages.
Officials stated that ‘Hinchi’ reflects a collective commitment to transforming risk into resilience, paving the way for a safer and self-reliant future. The initiative is being seen as a significant step towards curbing poppy farming in the state.-----------
