Guwahati, 22 April (HS): The Assam Pradesh BJP has strongly condemned a statement made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in which he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist,” terming the remark highly insensitive and against democratic values.
BJP spokesperson Dr. Devajit Mahanta said such comments are deeply objectionable and reflect a worrying decline in the standards of political discourse. He stated that while ideological differences are natural in a democracy, the use of defamatory language against the Prime Minister undermines the dignity of the highest constitutional office in the country.
Mahanta further alleged that this was not the first instance of Kharge making remarks insensitive to public sentiment. Referring to the time when Assam’s cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika was conferred the Bharat Ratna, he claimed Kharge had questioned the decision to award the honour to a singer. He lalso criticized comments made by Kharge’s son, Priyank Kharge, regarding the capabilities of Assam’s youth.
He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s internal security has been strengthened with firm action against terrorism, and that such provocative remarks weaken national unity.
The Assam Pradesh BJP described Kharge’s statement as highly irresponsible and inappropriate for someone holding such a senior position. The party urged the Congress leadership to exercise restraint, uphold democratic values and maintain decorum in public statements, while also demanding an apology from Kharge and the Congress party to the people of the country.----------
