Thiruvananthapuram, 22 April (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in Kerala, warning of rising temperatures and uncomfortable weather conditions across the state until Friday.
According to the IMD, Palakkad district is likely to record the highest temperature, touching up to 40°C, followed by Kollam at 39°C. Kottayam may see temperatures rise to 38°C, while districts including Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod are expected to experience highs of around 37°C. In the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, the mercury could climb to 36°C.
The weather agency has cautioned that temperatures are likely to remain 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal levels during this period. Combined with high humidity, this is expected to result in hot and uncomfortable conditions, particularly in coastal and lowland areas, excluding hilly regions.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and reducing outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
Meanwhile, the IMD has also forecast the possibility of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in various districts until Saturday. Rainfall activity is expected mainly during the evening hours.
The department has warned that lightning can be dangerous and urged people to remain vigilant, especially during sudden weather changes.
The current weather pattern reflects a typical pre-monsoon phase in Kerala, marked by rising daytime temperatures and intermittent evening showers. Residents are advised to closely follow official weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines issued by authorities.
