Kolkata, 22 April (H.S.): A legal challenge has been filed in the Calcutta High Court against the Election Commission’s recent restrictions on the use of motorcycles ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

As per information, the court has allowed the filing of the case, and the matter is likely to be heard on April 23. The petitioners have argued that the restrictions imposed by the Election Commission could create inconvenience for the general public.

The controversy stems from a notification issued by the Election Commission on Tuesday, which imposed curbs on bike movement two days before polling. As per the order, bike rallies have been banned during this period. Additionally, between 6 AM and 6 PM, motorcycles can be used but without carrying pillion riders.

On polling day, similar restrictions will apply, with limited relaxation only for essential purposes such as going to vote or handling urgent work. The Commission has clarified that exemptions will be allowed for emergencies like medical needs, family responsibilities, or school-related travel.

It has also been stated that app-based bike services may not fall under these restrictions, while individuals seeking special permission must obtain written approval from their local police station.

The move by the Election Commission is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring free and fair elections. However, the decision has sparked debate, with critics arguing that it may disrupt normal life.

The court’s upcoming hearing is expected to determine whether these restrictions will remain in force or be modified ahead of polling.
