Chennai, 22 April (H.S.): With polling for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) has rolled out an extensive travel plan to facilitate voters heading to their hometowns, operating over 6,000 special buses from Chennai.
According to an official statement, a total of 6,132 special buses are being operated on April 22, supplementing the regular fleet of 2,092 services departing from the city. The move comes in anticipation of a massive surge in passenger traffic, as thousands of residents typically travel back to their native districts to cast their votes.
Transport officials said an additional 1,505 special buses will be pressed into service on polling day to cater to last-minute travel needs and return journeys. Authorities are expecting heavy rush across major bus terminals as election day approaches.
The special services will primarily originate from Chennai’s key transport hubs — Koyambedu, Kilambakkam, and Madhavaram — identified as major departure points to ensure smooth dispersal of passengers across the state.
Passengers have been strongly advised to make advance reservations to avoid last-minute inconvenience, particularly in view of the high demand. Officials noted that prior booking would help ease congestion at bus stations and ensure a more orderly travel experience.
To further streamline connectivity, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will operate round-the-clock feeder services linking Koyambedu with Kilambakkam and Madhavaram, enabling seamless access to long-distance buses.
Meanwhile, commuters have raised concerns over a sharp spike in fares charged by private omni bus operators, with some reporting rates as high as three times the usual fares. Many have urged authorities to step in and regulate pricing during the peak travel period.
Officials expressed confidence that the additional services will effectively manage the election rush and ensure hassle-free travel for voters.
