Chandigarh, 21 April (H.S.): A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of

Punjab Police died on Tuesday morning after accidentally sustaining a gunshot

injury in Phagwara. The deceased officer, Yogesh Kumar, was posted with the

Anti-Narcotics Task Force and had been transferred to Chandigarh just three

days ago.

According to police officials, the incident occurred when DSP Yogesh Kumar

was cleaning his service revolver at his residence. During the process, the

firearm reportedly went off accidentally, and the bullet struck him in the

chest.

Family members immediately rushed him to a private hospital in Jalandhar.

However, doctors declared him brought dead on arrival. The incident has sent

shockwaves through the police department and the local community.

Kapurthala SP Madhavi Sharma confirmed the incident and stated that further

action would be taken based on the statements of the family members.

Preliminary findings suggest that the firing was accidental in nature.

The incident reportedly took place around 7:30 am when the officer was at

home with his family, including his wife, parents, son, and daughter. According

to his father, Ram Kumar Sharma, he had arrived at the house to drop off a car,

as his daughter-in-law needed it to go to her workplace at Guru Nanak College.

He further stated that while he was at the gate, he heard that a gunshot had

been fired inside the house. By the time he reached, the incident had already

occurred. He added that his son was sitting on a sofa and cleaning the pistol

as he had to deposit it, when the gun accidentally discharged.

Police have initiated standard procedures, and the exact sequence of events

is being verified. Authorities have reiterated that initial evidence points to

an accidental discharge, though a detailed inquiry is underway.
