East Burdwan, 19 April (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday addressed an election rally in Monteswar in East Burdwan district, campaigning in support of Trinamool Congress candidate Siddiqullah Chowdhury.
Launching a sharp attack on the BJP, Banerjee said the party had recently faced embarrassment in Parliament and was now trying to “save face.” She alleged that while the BJP speaks about women’s rights, its intentions are not genuine. She also questioned why the Women’s Reservation Bill, passed in 2023, has not yet been implemented.
The Chief Minister further accused the BJP of influencing migrant workers by making them take oaths on religious texts to secure votes.
During the rally, Banerjee also sent a stern message to dissenting leaders within her party. Without naming anyone, she criticised a local Trinamool leader for not attending the rally and warned that those who do not work for the party or indirectly help the BJP would be removed.
Notably, reports of differences between candidate Siddiqullah Chowdhury and local leader Ahmed Hossain Sheikh have surfaced, with some party workers staying away from campaign activities in the Monteswar constituency.
