Thiruvananthapuram, 15 April (H.S.):Tensions within the United Democratic Front (UDF) have surfaced ahead of the Kerala Assembly election results, with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) expressing strong dissatisfaction over the ongoing tussle within the Congress regarding the chief ministerial post.
IUML State General Secretary P. M. A. Salam has cautioned that the party views the developments with concern and warned of serious consequences if the Congress fails to rein in the public speculation. He noted that if reports of internal discord are accurate, it undermines the collective mandate given by the people in favour of the UDF.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions between the camps of Opposition Leader V. D. Satheesan and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Supporters of both leaders have been engaged in a visible and increasingly aggressive campaign—especially on social media—projecting their respective leaders as the most suitable candidate for the chief minister’s post.
Sources indicate that efforts to secure the backing of newly elected MLAs have already begun within both camps, further intensifying the rivalry even before the results are officially declared.
A section within the Muslim League has strongly opposed the continuation of such public disputes, arguing that it risks eroding voter confidence and damaging the credibility of the UDF alliance. Party leaders have urged the Congress high command to intervene swiftly and restore discipline within the state unit.
An unnamed IUML leader made it clear that the issue can no longer be dismissed as an internal matter of the Congress, warning that it has wider implications for the unity and trustworthiness of the UDF. The leader also hinted that the League may be compelled to reconsider its political course if the situation persists.
Meanwhile, senior Congress figures including Benny Behanan, K. C. Joseph and K. Muraleedharan have reportedly conveyed their concerns over the infighting. It is learnt that Behanan has written to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, flagging the issue and seeking immediate corrective action.
