Imphal, 15 April (HS): A suspected drug peddler was apprehended during a joint security operation at Tulihal Airport in Imphal on April 14, leading to the seizure of a large quantity of contraband and triggering subsequent law and order disturbances in Bishnupur district.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team of CISF, Assam Rifles and Manipur Airport Police detained Md. Sabir Ahamed, a resident of Kwakta Khuman Thongkhong under Moirang Sub-Division. During the inspection of his checked-in baggage, approximately 6.74 kg (including container weight) of suspected brown sugar, concealed inside six containers, was recovered. The accused along with the seized narcotics was handed over to Singjamei Police Station, where a case has been registered.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrested individual reportedly revealed information about a hidden cache of arms and ammunition in the Kwakta area of Bishnupur district. Acting swiftly on the input, security forces launched a follow-up operation in the region.

However, the operation faced resistance near Thinungei after rumours regarding the identity and intent of the security personnel spread among locals. A large crowd gathered and obstructed the movement of security vehicles.

The situation turned volatile when sections of the mob resorted to violence, damaging and setting ablaze two vehicles of the security forces. Attempts were also made to detain personnel, further escalating tensions in the area.

Reinforcements were rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control using minimal force, including tear smoke. Some civilians sustained injuries during the incident and were provided necessary medical aid.

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the mob violence, while efforts are ongoing to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly and obstruction of duty. A detailed investigation into the entire sequence of events is currently underway.

To ensure stability and prevent further unrest, a flag march was conducted in the affected area. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumours and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order.--------------
