Bhubaneswar, 15 April (H.S.): The state Fisheries Department has enforced a 61-day fishing ban along the entire coastline of Odisha from April 15 to June 14, 2026, as part of measures to protect marine biodiversity during the critical breeding season.
According to the government directive, all trawlers and mechanised fishing boats have been barred from venturing into the sea during this period. However, traditional and motorised boats up to 8.5 metres in length have been exempted from the restriction.
The annual prohibition is aimed at conserving marine resources by allowing fish and other aquatic species to breed and spawn without disturbance. The ban also coincides with a period of rough sea conditions, making fishing operations potentially hazardous. By limiting large-scale fishing, authorities seek to promote the regeneration of fish stocks and ensure long-term ecological sustainability.
The restriction is likely to have a significant economic impact on fishing communities, particularly in coastal districts such as Ganjam, where a majority of families rely heavily on daily fishing for their livelihood. With fishing activities suspended for two months, many households may face financial challenges.
Officials have cautioned that strict action will be taken against violators. Any breach of the ban will attract penalties, including seizure of vessels and legal proceedings under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act.
