Sonitpur (Assam), 13 April (HS): A truck allegedly carrying illegal timber met with an accident in the Rangapara area of Sonitpur district, creating a stir in the locality on Monday morning.

According to reports, the incident took place at No. 2 Bahumari village under Rangapara PS when a six-wheeler truck without a registration number, en route from Rangapara to Dhekiajuli, suddenly lost control and was overturned by the roadside. The vehicle was reportedly loaded with smuggled timber.

Following the accident, both the driver and the handyman fled the scene, raising suspicion of illegal transportation activities.

On receiving information, a team from Rangapara Police Station along with forest officials from the Amaribari Range Office rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation. As per sources in the Forest Department, the seized timber is estimated to be worth around ₹20 lakh.

Notably, allegations of rising illegal timber smuggling activities have been reported in Sonitpur district for a long time.-------------
