Kolkata, 30 March (H.S.):
Tension gripped Yamunanagar area under East Jadavpur Police Station on Monday following reports of firing and violent clashes, leaving several people injured, the police said.
Four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, they added.
According to local sources, the trouble began over alleged reckless bike riding, which led to an altercation. When a local youth protested, he was allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants and beaten up. There were also allegations that the attackers attempted to set him on fire by pouring petrol on him.
The incident triggered protests by local residents, who gathered outside the houses of the accused. The situation escalated further as more miscreants were allegedly brought into the area, leading to widespread violence.
Armed with sharp weapons, the attackers allegedly assaulted several people and vandalised a number of parked vehicles, locals claimed.
Residents also reported hearing gunshots, though police said the claims of firing are being verified.
A large police force was deployed in the area and central forces were also pressed into service to bring the situation under control.
The situation is now under control, but tension prevails, the police said, adding that an investigation has been initiated to identify others involved in the incident.
The incident has raised concerns over law and order in Kolkata ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
