Howrah, 30 March (H.S.):

A major fire broke out at a fan manufacturing factory in Domjur area of Howrah on Monday morning, officials said.

The blaze started around 6 am and quickly spread across the factory, engulfing machinery and raw materials, they said. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the unit, covering the surrounding area.

At least 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and efforts are on to bring the fire under control, fire officials said, adding that the blaze had not been fully doused yet.

Workers initially tried to control the fire, but failed, following which the fire brigade was alerted.

Officials said the presence of combustible materials inside the factory may have intensified the blaze. The congested nature of the area also delayed the arrival of fire engines.

There was apprehension that the fire could spread to nearby units, prompting swift action by firefighting teams.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. An investigation has been initiated, officials added.
