Shillong, 26 March (HS): The ongoing shortage of commercial LPG in Meghalaya has begun to take a toll on its tourism-driven hospitality sector, forcing hotels and restaurants to limit services and reduce menu offerings, officials said on Thursday.
Authorities indicated that the available LPG stock is currently being diverted to essential services such as hospitals and hostels, resulting in supply constraints for commercial establishments. This has led to operational challenges for hotels and eateries across key tourist destinations.
Hospitality operators in Shillong and Cherapunji reported scaling down kitchen operations and exploring alternative cooking methods. Some establishments have begun relying on firewood and charcoal, which has increased preparation time and limited the variety of dishes offered.
Guests about the shift to traditional slow cooking methods, requesting patience due to longer waiting periods and a restricted local menu.
Industry stakeholders noted that the fuel shortage has significantly disrupted routine kitchen functioning, with many unable to maintain their full range of services. Meanwhile, officials reiterated that ensuring uninterrupted supply to essential sectors remains the top priority, adding that steps are being taken to stabilise distribution.-----------
