Kolkata, 26 March (H.S.) : The parents of the 26-year-old female doctor who was raped and murdered in 2024 at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital have stated that justice for their daughter can only be ensured after a change in the state government. They emphasized that only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can end the misgovernance and lawlessness of the ruling Trinamool Congress and guarantee safety for women in West Bengal.

The victim’s mother has been fielded by the BJP as a candidate from the Panihati Assembly constituency, traditionally considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress. The parents stressed that political change is necessary for the full truth of the incident to emerge. The father said, “We have entered politics not for power, but for women’s safety.”

Both parents plan to campaign together in the constituency and are open to campaigning in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur constituency if requested by the party. The mother said she had previously received political offers but was not ready at the time. She has now decided to contest to end the “misgovernance and lawlessness” of the Trinamool Congress.

The 2024 incident had sent shockwaves across the state. The doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the hospital. While the accused, Sanjay Roy, was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, the family believes there were other individuals involved. The mother said, “One man alone could not have done this in such a secure building.” The father alleged attempts were made to destroy evidence in the case.

Their political entry ahead of this year’s Assembly elections is also seen as an effort to channel public sentiment that arose during the R.G. Kar case. The parents maintained that a victory would ensure justice for their daughter and enhance safety for women in the constituency.

They emphasized that their goal is not personal power, but ensuring women’s security and the rule of law in West Bengal. The father added, “We will fight till the end to fulfil our daughter’s dreams.”
