Howrah, 24 March (H.S.): Two persons were arrested for allegedly running an illegal satta (betting) operation in Howrah district, the police said on Tuesday.

Acting on source information, a team of the Detective Department of the Howrah Police Commissionerate conducted a raid at a residence in Anandnagar area and caught the accused red-handed while writing betting slips.

The accused have been identified as Ananda Pal (52) and Manas Pal (33).

Police said cash amounting to Rs 12,200, several satta pads, a calculator and some registers were recovered from their possession.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to being involved in the illegal betting business for a long time. They also revealed that one Abhijit Pal alias ‘Chottu’ is the main operator of the racket, running the network through them.

A case has been registered at Nischinda Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competitions Act, the police added.
