North 24 Paragnas, 24 March (H.S.): In the midst of political campaigns highlighting women’s safety, a BJP leader’s arrest in Bangaon has triggered a major controversy ahead of the elections.

The accused, identified as Jay Haldar, is a mandal president (Mandal-2, Bangaon North) of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He resides in Haldar Para under Gopalnagar Police Station area.

According to police sources, Haldar’s wife lodged a written complaint alleging that she was brutally assaulted and an attempt was made on her life. She reportedly managed to escape. Acting on the complaint, police arrested Haldar from his residence area on Monday night.

He was produced before the Bangaon Sub-Divisional Court on Tuesday. The complainant stated that she had faced abuse and the police acted on her complaint, though she termed it a family matter and declined further comments.

However, the accused denied the allegations, claiming it was a minor domestic dispute. He alleged that he was arrested due to political bias, stating that he was targeted for being associated with the BJP.

The incident has sparked a political war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Trinamool Congress. BJP leaders claimed the complaint was filed under pressure, while Trinamool leaders accused the BJP of hypocrisy on women’s safety.

The police said further investigation is underway
