East Burdwan, 18 March (H.S.)
A man was arrested with around seven kilograms of contraband ganja from a moving train in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Gobinda Roy (38), a resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district, was apprehended by personnel of the GRP police station at Kalna on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the police carried out a search operation around 12:45 pm and recovered the contraband from a bag in his possession, an officer said.
During preliminary interrogation, Roy told the police that he was travelling from New Cooch Behar Junction to Ambika Kalna railway station to deliver the consignment.
A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, and he will be produced before a local court in Purba Bardhaman on Wednesday, police added.
The police said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb narcotics trafficking in the region.
