Chennai, 15 March (H.S.):Ending weeks of speculation and political suspense, the Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

According to the poll panel, Puducherry will go to the polls on April 9, while the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election will be held on April 23. The counting of votes for both elections will take place on May 4.

The announcement sets the stage for a high-stakes political contest in Tamil Nadu, one of India’s most politically vibrant states. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will seek a second consecutive term in office.

The principal challenge is expected to come from the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, which is aiming to reclaim power and return to Fort St. George, the seat of the Tamil Nadu government.

Apart from the traditional rivalry between the two Dravidian majors, the election has also drawn significant attention due to the political entry of actor Vijay, whose newly formed party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) will be contesting its first Assembly election.

Political observers view this as a crucial test for the actor-turned-politician as he attempts to challenge the dominance of the established Dravidian parties. His entry has also revived discussions about the historic link between Tamil cinema and politics.

Tamil Nadu has previously seen several film personalities rise to political leadership, most notably former chief ministers M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics is therefore being closely watched to see whether his popularity on screen can translate into electoral success.

In the outgoing Assembly, the DMK holds 133 seats, making it the dominant force in the House, while the AIADMK has 66 members and the Congress holds 18 seats. Other parties represented include the PMK, VCK, CPI, CPM and BJP.

With the election schedule now formally announced, political parties are expected to intensify their campaigns across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, setting the stage for a closely watched and fiercely contested election in the coming weeks.
