Lucknow, 15
March (HS): BSP supremo Mayawati asked the Centre on Sunday to confer the
Bharat Ratna on party founder Kanshi Ram rather than repeating the Congress's
error with B R Ambedkar. On Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary, Mayawati lambasted
the Samajwadi Party, Congress, and BJP, claiming they only talk about the
Bahujan but rarely act for their elevation. The Muslim community has greatly
distanced itself from these parties, and with the Brahmin community aligning
with the BSP, it appears that the SP's political and caste enmity has grown,
Mayawati stated. She praised Kanshi Ram for his efforts toward an equal society
and encouraged the BJP-led government to confer the highest civilian honor on
him.
The present
BJP-NDA administration at the Centre should not delay awarding 'Bahujan' leader
Kanshi Ram ji with the Bharat Ratna, as the Congress party did not do so for
the architect of India's Constitution, Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. His
contribution to the creation of an equitable society in the country, as written
in the Constitution, is historic, and as a result, he is also remembered in the
hearts of the people, according to the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister. He
not only established a political movement, but also built a government in a
huge and significant state such as Uttar Pradesh and appointed me as its chief
minister, she remarked of the Dalit legend.
Mayawati's
comments came a day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that if
Jawaharlal Nehru had been alive, Kanshi Ram would have been appointed chief
minister by the Congress. Nehru, India's first prime minister, died in 1964,
while Kanshi Ram rose to prominence in politics with the establishment of the
backwards-championing BAMCEF in 1978, which was later strengthened by the
foundation of the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1984.
In his
homage to the Dalit icon, Gandhi stated that Mahatma Gandhi, Babasaheb Bhimrao
Ambedkar, and Kanshi Ram never compromised on their convictions. Gandhi was
addressing at the Samvidhan Sammelan, which took place in Lucknow ahead of
Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary. He stated that if Jawaharlal Nehru were still
alive, Kanshi Ram would have served as the Congress' chief minister.
