Kolkata, 23 February (H.S.): Senior politician Mukul Roy was cremated on Monday evening at the Halisahar crematorium in North 24 Parganas district, a short distance from his residence in Bijpur.

Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, remained present alongside Roy’s son, Subhranshu Roy, throughout the funeral proceedings.

Roy’s passing cast a pall of gloom over West Bengal’s political circles, where he was once regarded as a key strategist. Upon receiving news of his demise, Abhishek Banerjee reportedly called Subhranshu Roy to convey his condolences and assured the family of full support in conducting the last rites.

The Trinamool Congress leader was present during multiple stages of the final journey. When Roy’s mortal remains were brought to the state Assembly, former colleagues paid their respects. Abhishek Banerjee offered floral tributes and paid homage by touching the late leader’s feet.

Later, as the body was taken to Roy’s residence in Bijpur for a final farewell, Banerjee visited the house, where a large number of supporters and local residents had gathered. A funeral procession was carried out from Bijpur to the Halisahar crematorium, attended by several political figures, including Partha Bhowmick and Shiuli Saha.

Roy was cremated at the Halisahar crematorium with customary rites.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over Roy’s demise, describing him as a “long-time political associate.” However, she was unable to attend the funeral.

Political observers noted that despite years of political differences and shifting allegiances, the events of the past 24 hours underscored the enduring personal and political equations that shaped West Bengal’s political landscape.
