Kolkata, 23 February (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of senior leader Mukul Roy, describing his passing as a major loss to Bengal’s political landscape.

In a post on social media platform X, Mamata Banerjee said she was “deeply shaken and saddened” by Mukul Roy’s sudden demise. Recalling their long association, she said Roy had been a close political colleague and a fellow fighter in several political struggles. “His departure has caused me immense personal grief,” she wrote.

The Chief Minister noted that Mukul Roy had worked tirelessly for the Trinamool Congress since its inception and played a crucial role in strengthening the party. She recalled that he had also served as a Union Minister and enjoyed acceptance across political circles. Referring to the different phases of his political journey, Banerjee said his organisational skills and contributions to Bengal politics would not be forgotten and would be felt across party lines.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Mamata Banerjee extended her heartfelt sympathies and addressed Roy’s son, Shubhroshukla Roy, urging him to remain strong and assuring that the party stood with him during this difficult time.

Abhishek Banerjee, in his condolence message, said that Mukul Roy’s death marked “the end of an era” in Bengal’s political history. Describing him as a veteran leader with vast experience, Abhishek said Roy’s contributions helped shape a significant phase of the state’s public and political journey.

Highlighting Roy’s role as a founding pillar of the All India Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee said he was instrumental in expanding and consolidating the organisation during its formative years. “His dedication to public life will be remembered with admiration,” he said.

Abhishek Banerjee also conveyed his sincere sympathies to Mukul Roy’s family, friends and admirers, and prayed for eternal peace for the departed leader’s soul.
