Chennai, 23 February (H.S.) : Surgeons at Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, have achieved a remarkable medical milestone by successfully performing a rare, bloodless combined heart surgery on a 69-year-old patient possessing the extremely rare Bombay blood group.
The patient was diagnosed with a complex combination of conditions, including a leak in the aortic valve and a critical blockage in the main artery of the heart. Given the patient's rare blood type, which is found in less than 0.0004 percent of the global population, traditional surgery involving blood transfusions posed a life-threatening challenge due to the severe scarcity of compatible donors.
The surgical team, led by senior cardiac specialists, opted for a meticulously planned bloodless surgical approach. This strategy involved the use of advanced techniques such as intraoperative cell salvage, which collects and filters the patient's own lost blood before reinfusing it, and acute normovolemic hemodilution.
The medical team also utilized specialized medications to minimize bleeding and optimize the patient’s hemoglobin levels prior to the procedure. These innovative measures ensured that the combined aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) were completed without the need for a single unit of external donor blood.
According to updates from the hospital administration in Chennai, the patient responded exceptionally well to the procedure and has since been discharged in stable condition. Medical experts emphasized that this success highlights the hospital's capability to manage high-risk cardiac cases through advanced surgical technology and precision.
The bloodless method not only bypassed the logistical nightmare of sourcing Bombay blood but also reduced the risk of transfusion-related complications and infections.
This successful intervention is being hailed as a significant advancement in cardiac care, offering new hope for patients with rare blood types requiring complex surgical procedures.
