Hailakandi (Assam), 23 February (HS): In a major breakthrough under Assam’s ongoing anti-drug drive, Hailakandi Police on Monday seized a large consignment of Yaba tablets worth approximately ₹5 crore and arrested two alleged drug traffickers.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team launched a special operation at Boalghat First Part area in Hailakandi district. During the operation, officials intercepted a suspicious Mahindra TUV vehicle bearing registration number MZ-01R-6434.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, the police discovered a specially designed concealed chamber used to hide contraband. From the hidden compartment, the team recovered 1,21,000 Yaba tablets packed in 12 separate packets.

According to sources, the estimated market value of the seized narcotic tablets is around ₹5 crore. The seizure is considered one of the significant recoveries made by the district police this year.

Two individuals, identified as Miss Marchi Pillai and Thongjagin Haokip, were arrested on the spot for their alleged involvement in the transportation of the contraband. Both are currently in police custody and are being interrogated to ascertain the source and intended destination of the consignment.

Police sources further stated that an investigation has been initiated to determine whether the consignment is linked to a larger inter-state or international drug trafficking network. More arrests have not been ruled out as the probe progresses.----------
