Kolkata, 23 February (H.S.) : Senior BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Monday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress, alleging that women are “no longer safe” in West Bengal following reports of the alleged assault of a woman in East Midnapore district.

In a post on social media, Paul claimed that a woman in Potashpur was allegedly tied up and assaulted in front of her minor daughter after she protested against the construction of a concrete road under the ‘Paray Samadhan’ scheme, terming it “unplanned”. She alleged that the accused continued with the road work after restraining the woman and leaving her in a distressed condition.

According to Paul, a video of the incident has gone viral, and an FIR has been lodged at the local police station in connection with the matter.

Citing the incident, Paul criticised the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that those who raise their voices in protest are subjected to harassment under the present regime.

She questioned whether women’s safety is being adequately ensured in the state and asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party stands for corruption-free and transparent governance, promising improved law and order if voted to power.

As of around 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Paul’s post, which included the video, had garnered 421 reactions and over 1,000 comments, while the video had been viewed more than 2.07 lakh times on social media.
