Kolkata, 05 January (H.S.) : The West Bengal government has completed extensive preparations for the Gangasagar Mela, ensuring all necessary arrangements for the convenience and safety of pilgrims from Kolkata to Gangasagar. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she will meet pilgrims heading to Gangasagar at Outram Ghat on Thursday, January 08, and will also interact with devotees arriving from other states.

The Chief Minister said that pilgrims, devotees, as well as journalists deployed on duty at the fair have been brought under a ₹5 lakh insurance cover. She noted that media personnel play a crucial role in disseminating information related to the Gangasagar Mela and this responsibility has been kept in mind while extending the insurance facility.

According to the Chief Minister, the insurance coverage will remain in effect from January 07 to January 19. She pointed out that the Gangasagar island region is surrounded by water and forests, posing risks from wild animals such as tigers, crocodiles and snakes. In addition, there are potential hazards during travel by steamers, boats and other vessels.

Keeping these risks in view, the state government has taken the decision to ensure that the Gangasagar Mela is conducted in a safe, orderly and peaceful manner.
