Kolkata, 05 January ((H.S.) : Leader of the newly formed Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) and suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Monday visited Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground to inspect the venue for a proposed mega political rally. Kabir indicated that the rally could be held in early February and said permission would be sought from the concerned authorities, though no specific date has been announced yet.

During the inspection, a group of Trinamool Congress supporters raised slogans against Kabir, accusing him of being an agent of the Bharatiya Janata Party and chanting “go back.” The protesters briefly gheraoed his vehicle and staged a demonstration at the site.

Reacting to the protest, Humayun Kabir said the ruling party was “afraid” and asserted that he would respond with his strength through the proposed rally. He made it clear that his primary objective in the 2026 Assembly elections is to unseat what he described as a corrupt Trinamool Congress government and establish a transparent system of governance in the state.

It may be recalled that the Trinamool Congress distanced itself from Kabir after he laid the foundation stone for a mosque in Murshidabad modeled on the Babri Masjid. Making his political intentions explicit, Kabir appealed to the people for support, describing the move as a necessary political change for West Bengal.

Kabir also invoked the political legacy of veteran leader Ghani Khan Choudhury, recalling a time when Congress rallies at the Brigade Parade Ground drew massive crowds and carried significant political influence. He claimed that his proposed rally aims to mobilise around 10 lakh people, which he described as a potential turning point in Bengal’s political landscape.
