Alappuzha, 05 Jan (H.S.): Kerala Police have registered a criminal case against the Haripad Taluk Hospital in Alappuzha district following the deaths of two patients who had undergone dialysis at the facility. The case has been filed by the Haripad police on charges of medical negligence.
The FIR has been registered under Sections 125 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The hospital superintendent and staff members of the dialysis unit have been named as accused in the case.
The action follows a complaint lodged by the relatives of Ramachandran, one of the deceased patients. Police have also sought the constitution of a new medical board to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Majid, a native of Kayamkulam, and Ramachandran, a resident of Haripad. Both had undergone dialysis at the Haripad Taluk Hospital before their deaths.
According to the family members of Ramachandran, infection contracted from the dialysis centre was the cause of death. They further alleged that the hospital authorities failed to provide timely care and adequate attention after the patients developed complications following the procedure.
The incident has triggered serious concerns over hygiene standards, infection control, and patient safety in government-run dialysis units. With public outrage mounting, the demand for accountability and an independent medical probe has intensified.
Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the proposed medical board inquiry, which is expected to examine whether lapses in protocol or negligence on the part of hospital authorities led to the deaths.
