Guwahati, 5 January (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, alleging that the party has consistently exploited the Miya community without extending support during times of distress.
Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that people from the Miya community were compelled to vote for Congress and even contribute funds to the party, yet received no assistance during evictions or moments of crisis. He asserted that Congress has failed the community when it mattered the most.
Dr Sarma also expressed confidence over defeating Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi in the Sivasagar Assembly constituency. He said the BJP’s local workers were sufficient to ensure Gogoi’s defeat and that he did not feel the need to campaign personally in Sivasagar. The Chief Minister added that the party has five to six potential candidates in the constituency, each capable of defeating Akhil Gogoi.
On the issue of the draft electoral roll, Dr Sarma stated that discrepancies after its publication are a common occurrence. He pointed out that there is a proper mechanism to correct errors through submission of Forms 6, 7, and 8 within the stipulated time frame.
The Chief Minister advised opposition parties to refrain from creating unnecessary panic through the media and instead follow the prescribed legal process if they have any objections regarding the voters’ list.---------
