Chennai, 9 August (H.S.): The Pattali Makkal Katchi's (PMK) general council meeting commenced in Mahabalipuram today, marked by a significant absence - party founder S Ramadoss. Despite his absence, an empty the chair was placed prominently at the center of the stage as a symbolic acknowledgement of his position.
The meeting is being chaired by Anbumani Ramadoss, who has asserted that several significant decisions will be taken during the gathering. Anbumani emphasized the party's commitment to upholding the ideals of its founder and working towards reclaiming Tamil Nadu.
The PMK has been embroiled in an internal power struggle between S Ramadoss and his son Anbumani. The senior Ramadoss had recently announced that he would reclaim the post of party president, citing the end of Anbumani's three-year tenure. However, Anbumani has contested this move, claiming that only the general council has the authority to elect the president.
Before the meeting, S Ramadoss's faction had approached the Madras High Court, seeking to restrain Anbumani from convening the general council meeting. However, Justice N Anand Venkatesh dismissed the petition, suggesting that the parties approach a civil court for remedy. The judge had also attempted to mediate a truce between the father-son duo, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
The outcome of this meeting is expected to have significant implications for the PMK's future direction and its preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. With both factions determined to assert their authority, the party's internal conflict is likely to continue.
