Nabanna Abhiyan on RG Kar incident anniversary: Police on high alert

Kolkata, 9 August (H.S.): It has been a year since the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, but the victim's family alleges that they have not yet got justice. Demanding justice for the RG Kar victim, her family has called for a Nabanna campaign on Saturday. The victim's family has called upon people from all sections except the Trinamool Congress to join the campaign.

Kolkata Police has made strict preparations to avoid possible tension in the city during the Nabanna campaign. Lalbazar has said that traffic will be controlled on many important roads of the city from 4 am to 10 pm on Saturday.

The movement of all types of cargo vehicles, except emergency service vehicles, will be banned on some roads. The list includes Vidyasagar Bridge, Khidirpur Road, Taratala Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, Hyde Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, RR Avenue, Red Road, Dufferin Road, Mayo Road, AJC Bose Road, SN Banerjee Road, MG Road, Brabourne Road and Howrah Bridge.

Steel barricades, containers and water cannons have been put up at several places in Kolkata ahead of the Nabanna Abhiyan. Barricades have been put up on all roads leading to the Vidyasagar Bridge to prevent processions. Apart from this, aluminium barricades have been put up on Turf View Road, Hastings Mazar, Furlong Gate and Khidirpur Road.

Last time, the Nabanna Abhiyan had led to huge tension. The BJP too had joined in supporting the event. Several people from both sides were injured in the breaking of barricades, vandalism, setting bikes on fire and clashes between protesters and police. The police fear a similar situation this time too. Therefore, security forces have been ordered to face the protesters unitedly.

Although an application was filed in the Calcutta High Court to stop the Nabanna Abhiyan, the High Court said that peaceful protests are a fundamental right of all. It is the responsibility of the police to maintain law and order and manage the situation.
