Udhampur, 6 August (H.S.): Police in Jammu’s Manwal area today claimed to have solved a snatching case with the recovery of Rs 20 lakh and arrest of two individuals involved in the crime.
According to a police official, a written complaint was lodged at Police Post Manwal on July 30 by one Sarita Kiran wife of Ravi Kumar of Roop Nagar, Jammu, stating therein that she had been deceived by one Asif Ali of Mansar, along with an unidentified associate.
Quoting the complaint, he said, the accused approached her with a fabricated story, claiming that his father was suffering from lung cancer and urgently required financial assistance.
The accused further misrepresented that he was in possession of 500 grams of gold, which he intended to sell to arrange funds for treatment, the police official said.
He said moved by the emotional plea, the complainant arranged Rs 20 lakh and agreed to meet the accused at Surinsar.
However, upon arrival, the accused along with his associate allegedly snatched the bag containing the cash and fled the scene, he said.
Based on the complaint, the police official said, an FIR number 97/2025 under sections 318(4), 307, and 3(5) of the BNS was registered at Police Station Jhajjar Kotli and the investigation was entrusted to PSI Bhawani Singh, incharge Police Post Manwal.
Following swift and effective investigation, he said, both accused Asif Ali and Raquib of Chani Mansar, were arrested and the full amount of Rs 20 lakh was recovered from their possession.
He said the recovered amount will be handed over to the victim only after seeking proper orders from the court in line with the victim-centric approach emphasized in the new criminal laws.
