Kolkata, 6 August (H.S.) The soldiers of Border Outpost Ghojadanga of 102nd Battalion of the BSF located on the India-Bangladesh International Border in West Bengal foiled the attempt of gold smuggling and recovered a consignment of illegal gold. The soldiers caught a smuggler when he was trying to cross the BSF duty point on a bicycle by hiding gold worth more than ₹62 lakhs in a bucket full of fish feed.
As per information, on the morning of August 5, the soldiers of Border Outpost Ghojadanga received information that a person was going to go towards Kalupota through the BSF duty point for the purpose of smuggling illegal gold. The company commander of the border post immediately alerted all the soldiers posted on duty. At around 6.30 am, during routine checking, the soldiers stopped a suspicious person who was carrying fish feed in two buckets on a bicycle. During the investigation, the soldiers recovered a packet from a bucket full of fodder, on questioning the person could not give any satisfactory answer. The soldiers immediately informed the company commander and stopped the person there. The company commander reached the spot with other soldiers and on opening the packet, six pieces of gold of different sizes were recovered from inside. The total weight of the recovered gold is 607.66 grams and the estimated price is ₹62 lakh 68 thousand 620. The soldiers brought him to the border post for further questioning.
Initial investigation revealed that this gold was smuggled across the border to India, which was to be transported further through local contacts. Even before this, the person has carried out smuggling attempts once or twice, he told that he was to get two thousand rupees in exchange for the delivery of this consignment of gold.
The Public Relations Officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier confirmed this incident and said that the BSF soldiers posted on the India-Bangladesh border are keeping a close watch on all types of illegal activities. He also praised the strong secret network of BSF while referring to the recent incidents related to illegal gold smuggling.
