Kolkata, 6 August (H.S.) – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a rally in Jhargram on Wednesday, accusing the Centre and the Assam government of attempting to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengal under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

Banerjee alleged that the SIR process was being misused to target genuine voters in the state. “Amit Shah should first show his own birth certificate,” she said from the stage, claiming the BJP was using old documents as a pretext to remove voters’ names from the electoral rolls, creating fear and driving some people to suicide. She urged citizens not to panic, assuring them that she would not allow anyone to strip them of their rights.-----+-

Criticism of Assam Government

The Chief Minister also accused the Assam government of sending notices to many residents of Bengal, calling the move “completely illegal.” Questioning the legal authority behind such actions, she warned that if genuine voters were removed from the rolls, her government would take strong action.
