Chennai, 6 August (H.S.) : In a recent meeting, leaders of Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at his residence in Chennai. The leaders, including VCK's Thirumavalavan, CPM's Shanmugam, and CPI's R. Mutharasan, urged the CM to enact a special legislation to prevent honour killings in Tamil Nadu.
The meeting comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of honour killings in the state. The leaders emphasized the need for a specific law to address this issue, citing the brutality and frequency of such incidents. CPI's Mutharasan had previously condemned the murder of a 22-year-old college student, Vidya, near Palladam in Tirupur district, highlighting the need for stringent action against those involved in honour killings.
A draft bill titled The Freedom of Marriage and Association and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honour Act 2022 was previously submitted to CM Stalin by activist Kathir, founder-director of Evidence, a Dalit human rights organization.
