Kolkata, 6 August (H.S.) – West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Shubhankar Sarkar has written to Haryana Governor Asim Kumar Ghosh expressing concern over the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in the state.

In a letter sent on Wednesday, Sarkar cited recent incidents in Panipat and other parts of Haryana where migrant workers from West Bengal and Bengali-speaking residents were reportedly mistreated by local authorities. He described the trend of branding Bengali speakers as “Bangladeshis” as a “dangerous signal” for the country’s social fabric.

Sarkar stressed that India is a multilingual nation whose Constitution upholds pluralism, and said that targeted attacks on Bengali-speaking citizens amount to an assault on constitutional values. He urged the Governor to take immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety, livelihood, and dignity of the community in Haryana.

The Congress leader also reminded Governor Ghosh of his own Bengali heritage, stating that this added responsibility to safeguard the language and community’s honour.
