Cooch Behar, 5 August (H.S.) Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari's convoy was attacked in Cooch Behar, allegedly by TMC goons. Suvendu’s vehicle was vandalized, and a police vehicle within his convoy was also damaged.
Suvendu had arrived at Bagdogra to meet the Cooch Behar police superintendent (SP) regarding recent attacks on BJP MLAs. After landing, his convoy headed towards Cooch Behar. Around 12:35 PM, chaos erupted as his convoy reached Khagrabari area. A crowd waving TMC and some black flags confronted the convoy with slogans such as “Go Back.” Protesters threw footwear at Suvendu’s car and smashed its windows with flag poles.
Reacting to the attack, Suvendu said, “The vehicle I was in was attacked. This was an attempt to kill me.” He accused North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha of conspiring to murder him.
The incident has sparked political turmoil. Balurghat MP and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar criticized police security lapses, questioning why the police failed to provide adequate security despite prior knowledge of Suvendu’s programme, and how protesters breached security. Meanwhile, Udayan Guha accused the BJP of being anti-Bengali language and vowed to protest BJP’s activities. However, he did not comment on the vandalism incident. The police have arrested one person so far in connection with the attack.
