Tinsukia (Assam), 05 August (HS): The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) apprehended a suspected Bangladeshi national in Tinsukia and handed him over to the police. The incident occurred during an ATASU-led drive against illegal immigrants in the district.

According to ATASU central president Milan Burhagohain, the team spotted several individuals posing as labourers near the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus stand. Upon interrogation, the group revealed plans to travel to Arunachal Pradesh, raising suspicions about their identity and nationality.

ATASU members detained the individuals and alerted the police, who are currently interrogating the suspects.

The incident comes amid an intensified crackdown on illegal immigrants in Assam. Alongside government action to evict illegal settlers from government and forest lands, local residents and organizations like ATASU are playing a proactive role in identifying and reporting suspected infiltrators.

Officials suspect that recent government drives to reclaim forest land may have displaced many illegal settlers, prompting them to move across the state in search of shelter.
