Spy Cameras in Spectacles Raise Security Concerns at Puri Jagannath Temple; Law Minister Issues Warning

Bhubaneswar, 5 August (H.S.) Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan has issued a stern warning regarding unauthorized photography inside the Puri Jagannath Temple, particularly involving hidden cameras embedded in spectacles. He stated that anyone caught attempting to take unauthorized images within the temple premises will face strict legal consequences.

Minister Harichandan highlighted the challenges security personnel encounter in detecting these concealed devices at entry points, noting that spy cameras often become apparent only when their flash activates during photo capture. “The increasing use of spy cameras disguised as spectacles presents a significant security challenge. We are actively reviewing the situation and will enhance security protocols to prevent such breaches. Those who violate temple rules will be dealt with firmly,” he said.

This warning follows a recent incident in which a youth from West Bengal was apprehended for recording footage inside the temple with a hidden camera in his spectacles. This incident marks the third case in a short period, with two other youths from Puri and Gujarat previously caught with similar devices, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current surveillance and security measures at the historic shrine.
