BJP MP urges Election Commission to act against Mamata Banerjee, alleges threats to booth-level officers

Kolkata, 5 Aug (H.S.)— BJP MP from Purulia, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, on Tuesday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of overstepping her constitutional authority and interfering in the electoral process. Mahato alleged that Banerjee had threatened booth-level officers (BLOs) not to remove any names from the voters’ list, a move he claimed posed a threat to national security.

The MP asserted that during a recent administrative meeting, the Chief Minister’s instructions to BLOs amounted to a direct attack on Indian democracy. He alleged that Banerjee was openly defying the powers of the Election Commission and protecting illegal voters to influence the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Mahato claimed that the sole aim of the Chief Minister and the Trinamool Congress was to safeguard the presence of illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi voters in the state’s electoral rolls. He alleged that in border districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, and North 24 Parganas, more than 10 million such illegal voters were included.

He further accused Banerjee of spreading misinformation by portraying the Election Commission’s ongoing special summary revision process as an attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, thereby protecting illegal voters.

In his letter, Mahato urged the Chief Election Commissioner to counter the “misleading narrative” created by Banerjee and to consider legal action against her under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
