IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall in Odisha Till September 2; Yellow Alert Issued

Bhubaneswar, 30 August (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha over the next four days, placing several districts under a yellow alert till September 2.

According to the regional meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar, rainfall activity will intensify from Saturday as a low-pressure area formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal strengthens monsoon currents. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are also likely in many parts of the state.

On Friday, heavy rainfall is expected in at least 20 districts, including coastal, northern, western and interior Odisha. Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada and Koraput are likely to receive particularly intense downpours.

The IMD bulletin further warned that on September 1, widespread heavy rainfall may lash most parts of the state, with Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj facing the risk of extremely heavy showers. By September 2, all districts of Odisha will remain under yellow warning for heavy rain.

Meteorologists said the system is expected to keep weather conditions wet across Odisha into the first week of September before rainfall activity gradually subsides.
