New Delhi, August 30(HS):

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IPU) recently organized a pioneering two-day symposium titled Inclusive Medicine and Health: For Children and Adults, Both Divyang and Able-bodied, through its University Inclusion and Accessibility Cell. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 176 students and educators, including representatives from institutions such as Ashtavakra Institute of Rehabilitation Science and Research and the Awadh Center for Education and Action for Autism.

Prof. Shalini Garg, Program Director, emphasized that the initiative transcends academic discourse to serve as a vital social and humanitarian call. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mahesh Verma underscored the essence of collective health, stating, Health begins not with 'I' but with 'We', while advocating for the recognition of persons with disabilities as differently-abled.

The symposium marked the launch of three key initiatives: the 10th edition of the Inclusion and Accessibility E-journal, a certificate course on Inclusive Medicine and Health developed in collaboration with V-Shesh, and a resource kit focused on assistive technologies. Attendees were introduced to Indian Sign Language and engaged in a disability awareness quiz. Additionally, cutting-edge AI tools like Seeing AI and government schemes including the ADIP program were spotlighted to enhance the independence and accessibility for persons with disabilities.

The event reinforced IPU's commitment to cultivating an inclusive society where accessibility is recognized as a fundamental right, driven by education, technology, and policy reforms.
