Chennai, 30 August (H.S.) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed a massive fake gold export scam, conducting raids at Chennai airport, cargo terminals, and several jewellery shops across the city. The agency's operation was part of a probe into a syndicate allegedly involved in exporting fake gold, disguising it as genuine, and claiming export benefits.
According to sources, the scam involved a network of traders, exporters, and jewellery manufacturers who would create counterfeit gold bars or jewelry and then export them, availing of export incentives. The CBI's raids aimed to gather evidence and identify key players in the racket.
During the operation, the CBI seized several documents, digital devices, and gold items suspected to be fake. The agency is scrutinizing the records to determine the extent of the scam and the financial losses incurred by the government. The investigation is ongoing, with the CBI expected to question several individuals and entities linked to the alleged scam.
