Kolkata, 27 August (H.S.): A fresh low-pressure system has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, marking the 10th such system in the past 37 days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to move gradually towards the central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours. While its impact on West Bengal may remain limited, coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience significant weather activity.

On Ganesh Chaturthi, the system’s effect will be felt across parts of West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the north Bay of Bengal until Thursday evening due to rough sea conditions.

On Wednesday, heavy rainfall is unlikely across South Bengal. However, coastal and western districts may receive light to moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds. Some areas may also witness partly cloudy skies. By Thursday, Kolkata and all South Bengal districts are expected to see thunderstorms with rain, along with squally winds at speeds of 30–40 km/h.

On Friday, rainfall activity will intensify, particularly in East and West Midnapore, where heavy rain is predicted. Other districts are expected to witness light to moderate showers.

From Wednesday through Friday, North Bengal is likely to receive scattered heavy rainfall. Districts such as Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar are under heavy rain alerts. Other districts may witness thunderstorms and moderate showers. Rainfall is forecast to increase further across North Bengal on Sunday and Monday.

Kolkata woke up on Wednesday to an overcast sky, with intermittent light showers followed by brief spells of sunshine. IMD officials noted the possibility of light rain in parts of the city during the evening. The maximum temperature in Kolkata is expected to hover around 32°C, while the minimum will remain close to 26°C.

With humidity levels nearing 93%, sultry and uncomfortable conditions are expected during the daytime. Rainfall intensity will likely increase on Thursday, with heavier spells forecast on Friday.
