Kolkata, 13 August (H.S.) —Kolkata Police have begun examining video footage to identify who allegedly assaulted the mother of the RG Kar Medical College doctor, who was raped and murdered, during the Nabanna Abhiyan protest on Saturday. The woman was reportedly injured during the demonstration, with the police facing accusations of assault.
A senior Kolkata Police official said on Tuesday night that some footage shows the woman holding the right side of her forehead, where injury marks were visible. However, initial checks have not revealed any visuals of police personnel striking her. “This is only a preliminary analysis. A clear conclusion can be drawn only after thoroughly reviewing all footage,” the officer stated.
On the day of the incident, the victim’s mother told the media, “I asked for justice, and today I was beaten. Several police officers attacked me, broke my bangle, hit me on the forehead, and injured my arm.”
Following the protest, she was taken to a hospital and discharged after a day of treatment. Her husband alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government exerted pressure to prevent any government hospital from admitting her, forcing them to seek treatment at a private hospital. He further claimed that the private hospital was also pressured to omit any mention of police assault or injuries in her medical report.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma assured that if any individual is found to have assaulted her, they will be identified and action will be taken. “We are investigating all aspects. CCTV footage is being reviewed. It is not possible to comment at this stage,” he said.
The Nabanna Abhiyan protest also saw the participation of BJP leaders and workers, during which several police personnel were injured. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari stated that the victim’s mother sustained serious injuries and underwent both CT scan and MRI tests, while the victim’s father also suffered minor injuries.
