Jalpaiguri, 13 August (H.S.): Due to torrential rains in North Bengal, a brother and sister sleeping in the house died on the spot when a mud wall collapsed in Paghalupada area of Sahu Dangi of Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Madhumita Modak (3) and Devayan Modak (one and a half years). Both were sleeping with their parents in a mud house with a tin roof. At the same time, the wall of the neighboring house suddenly collapsed and the children were buried under the debris. Amid the heavy rain and darkness of the night, the local people somehow removed the debris and brought them out, but by then both had died.

It has been raining continuously for the last several days in Jalgaiguri district. The Meteorological Department had issued a red alert here. On Tuesday also, it rained heavily throughout the day, due to which the ground was filled with moisture and the structures made of mud became weak.

On information,the police reached the spot and the bodies were sent for postmortem.
