Rangapara (Assam), 13 August (HS): Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday inaugurated the office of the Co-District Commissioner at Rangapara in Sonitpur district.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Hazarika said the State Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, is working to improve governance through infrastructure development and timely policy execution. The creation of Co-Districts, he noted, is aimed at bringing administrative services closer to the public.

Hazarika pointed out that 39 Co-Districts were launched in the first phase on October 4–5, 2024, and 10 more in the second phase on August 12–13, 2025, bringing the total to 49. With the new office, residents of Rangapara will no longer need to travel to Tezpur for district-level services, saving both time and expenses.

The Minister highlighted the impact of welfare schemes such as Orunodoi, Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan and Nijut Moina, adding that recruitment is now strictly merit-based with corruption in the Assam Public Service Commission eliminated. He also cited significant improvements in road infrastructure, establishment of 16 medical colleges and one AIIMS and plans to increase medical seat capacity.

On flood control, Hazarika said 1,000 km of embankments have been built in the past five years, reducing flood damage substantially, with the government aiming for complete elimination of flooding in the future. He also mentioned ongoing eviction drives against illegal encroachments to protect the identity of indigenous communities.

The event was attended by MLA Krishna Kamal Tanti, the Sonitpur District Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, the Co-District Commissioner and other dignitaries.
