Guwahati, 13 August (HS): State BJP Vice President Tapan Kumar Gogoi has strongly criticised Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi for “surrendering” before the Congress and meeting its leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi. Gogoi alleged that this move signals the “death” of Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s national consciousness, aligning his ideology and statements with the Congress.
He said the Congress was responsible for the killing of 855 Assamese people during the Assam Movement, in addition to incidents of rape, shootings, and permanent disabilities and has historically protected “thousands of Bangladeshis.” According to him, at a time when the indigenous people of Assam have welcomed eviction drives against encroachments by Bengali-origin Muslims, Lurinjyoti Gogoi and AJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan have chosen to side with encroachers, thereby insulting the Assamese nation.
Tapan Gogoi further alleged that Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s motive is to secure “Miya” votes for the 2026 elections, likening him to historical figures who supported migration of Bengali-origin Muslims into Assam. He accused such leaders of threatening Assamese nationalism and acting as sycophants to the Gandhi family.
Highlighting demographic changes, he claimed that Bengali-origin Muslims have been steadily encroaching on government, forest, tribal belt, and Satra lands, gaining political dominance in nine districts and reducing indigenous people to minorities there. He warned that this trend could lead to complete political control of Assam by this group.
The BJP leader urged the people of Assam to remain vigilant against leaders and parties that, in his view, compromised indigenous rights for political gain.
